Excerpt

My fingers curl around the knob and I open it an inch. A soft sigh escapes my lips. Weston. “What are you doin’ here?” Weston runs his fingers through his hair and kicks the door open with his good foot. Both arms cross over his chest as he leans against the doorjamb. “That depends on if you let me in or not.” Why is he here? Heat swarms my cheeks remembering everything we just done in that bathroom. Could he embarrass me anymore? “Why would I let you inside? It’s in the middle of the night.” I give him a good once over. “And you’re drunk.” He reaches down and digs into his front pocket. He pulls out my cellphone and dangles it in front of my face by two fingers. “This is the reason you’d let me inside.” What? I slap my palms against my pajama shorts and realize I really don’t have my phone. Dammit. Weston hums underneath his breath as he brings my phone closer to his face. “Looks like someone has a new text message.” “Give it back, Weston.” The edge of his mouth pulls up slightly. “Let me inside and I will.” “Why? What’s in here that isn’t out there?” Something passes over his face that I can’t pinpoint. “Let me inside, Roxanne.” I felt that in-between my legs. That word slipping from that mouth is more than I can take. Keeping my eyes on his, I take a step backwards while opening the door wider for him. Something appetizingly wicked heats in those brown eyes. With the help of one crutch, he wobbles forward. I watch as he shuts the door and locks it behind him. His gaze rolls over my small apartment and then back to me. Taking his bottom lip in-between his teeth he places one arm against the wall. “Is he here?” What? Who? Leaning closer he presses his cheek against my own. “Is he here?” “Is who here?” A stern grip cups my hip and guides me until I’m pressed against the wall. A strong wisp of alcohol heats my face. He’s definitely been drinking but for some reason he doesn’t seem too drunk. “Don’t play with me,” he whispers against my mouth. Is Blake here?” Blake? Why would Blake be here? “Weston you’re clearly drunk–“ A groan slips from his clenched teeth and he presses his hand tighter around my hip. “Is he here?” There is a demanding tone in his voice that makes a side of me quiver. “No.” Ten rough fingers grip the nape of my neck and force my mouth upward. “Was he here?” My thighs turn to goop. If he wasn’t pressing himself against me I’d probably fall. “No,” I whimper out. Lowering his mouth to my ear, he breathes in. “Did he kiss you?” I bite my lip and close my eyes. I’m burning up … everywhere. A hard weight is pressing against my lower stomach and it is slowly eating me alive. I don’t lie. And it’s mostly because I want to see his reaction. This aggressiveness is searing underneath my skin. I want it. “Yes, what’s it to you?” There is a few short moments of silence. All I hear is his harsh breathing against my ear. Then he laughs. It’s a low chuckle that sets that fire ablaze inside of me. The hand on my hip lowers to cup my ass and the other slides up my throat to gently grip my neck. “You like him, Roxanne? You like the way he talks to you? The way he touches you?” Anger rushes my throat and a painful lump beings to grow. Tilting my chin upward, I stare up at him. Those brown eyes bore into me and then lowering toward my lips. “Yes.” Something wild darkens his eyes. He laughs beneath his breathe and presses the palm of his thumb against my bottom lip. “Does he touch you like this?” he whispers against my mouth. He squeezes my ass and presses me harder into him. And I feel exactly how excited he is pressed firmly against my stomach. The truth is no one has ever made me feel this alive. Hormones that I haven’t felt in years are raging inside of me. “Answer me,” he hisses through his teeth. No, he doesn’t. Weston’s teeth grazes my bottom lip before he gently bites down. All my fingers clench into his biceps. “You’re drunk,” I whisper. I can feel his growl surge through me. “Does it look like I’m fuckin’ drunk, Roxanne. Stop avoiding the goddamn question. Let me fuckin’ have you.” Let me fuckin’ have you. Grabbing my back he pulls me closer so he can bury his face into my neck. My core is throbbing. I need this release. I need this friction. “No, he doesn’t,” I whisper. Weston squeezes me tighter and brings his lips to mine. “I didn’t think so.” He watches me through hooded eyes while he drags the tip of his finger to the drop in the front of my shirt. Arching my back, I press my chest against him. My tender nipples rub against his hard chest and it makes my head dizzy. “I’m goin’ to show you how you’re supposed to feel when you kiss.” God, I can’t think straight. Every atom in me is driving me toward him. Begging me to strip him out of those clothes and let him have his way with me. But everything is spinning in my mind. Ryan and Maddox. Weston’s reputation. One night wouldn’t hurt though, right? Just one night. But would one night be enough? Weston’s lips are hovering over mine as if he’s waiting on me to kiss him. To make the first move. I can already tell that there is no way one night will be enough. Those large hands. That full mouth. Tattoos and muscles. Can anyone say no to him?

Deer in Headlights - Cover Reveal - Day 1

Title: Deer in Headlights (Good Gods #1)
Author: Staci Hart
Release Date: Feb. 4th, 2013

Aphrodite never loses, not when it comes to love.

Immortality has its perks and its downsides. Boredom, for one, is unavoidable, but instead of playing parcheesi, the gods devised a game that uses humans as pawns. Remember Shakespeare? That was Apollo. Bonnie and Clyde? Aphrodite versus Ares.

Aphrodite is on deck once again, and she’ll defend her domain of love as she works to get the humans together before the clock runs out, while her opponent tries to keep them apart.

Game one is against Apollo, and Aphrodite knows she has her work cut out for her when he chooses Dean, a brooding rock star man-whore who believes women can’t be trusted. Aphrodite decides on Lex, a perfect match for Dean, even though her heart is guarded, locked away tight. She’d never let anyone in. Not ever. Of course, she hasn’t met Dean.

But there’s always more at stake than just the game when you’ve lived for thousands of years. The Olympians are the original dysfunctional family, surviving eons of love and lust, betrayal and lies, as friends and enemies, through feuds and wars. From Ares, the douchebag, who’s forever trying to start a fight and get Aphrodite into bed, to Persephone, her best friend, who she can always count on for a healthy helping of bacon on a bad day, the gods will take you on a lighthearted trip as they mess with humans, laugh and fight, lose love and gain power.

About the author:

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life -- a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom; she has three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife; even though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey. Her favorite word starts with f, ends with k, and there a uc in there. Just saying. From roots in Houston, to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she's not writing, she's sleeping, cleaning, or designing graphics. But let's be honest, she's mostly writing.

Billie Joe wasn’t all bad. That was part of the problem. All I had to do was hear his voice, feel the velvet softness of his lips…those strong arms wrapping around me…he became mine and no one else’s. We don’t have a relationship; we have an addiction to each other. I have to find the strength to break his spell, somehow…some way. Or, stay trapped in his web for the rest of my life. The rain surrounds me in the form of a mist as I realize that I am standing in the driveway again, lost in dreams. Pulling the collar of my jacket around my neck to stop the chill, I walk to the back of the Cadillac again, just to check. We might be in the middle of nowhere in this valley but meth has made crime an epidemic. It gnaw at the fringes of our people. No one would steal the Cadillac out of respect for dad, but I’d had to threaten to shot a couple of boys trying to steal the tires and rims a few months ago. They were buzzed outta their minds. It’s a wonder they didn’t shot me, but they were just looking for something quick to steal and sell. One shot in the air and they ran like mice. They will steal an antique mandolin in a heartbeat. They ain’t getting Blue Belle. I probably would shot someone in order to save her. Knowing the trunk is securely locked, I walk toward the front door of the little house. Before entering, I wipe my boots on the mat on the porch and shake my long, blonde hair to remove the moisture. Giving up, I finally wrap my hair into a makeshift ponytail and open the door. A wave of warmth and the smell of cinnamon greet me unexpectedly. “Good afternoon, welcome. I am Ernesto Lorenze,” a friendly male voice says from the corner of the dark room. I look around to see a tall, dark haired guy pull himself upright from a chair seated behind an antique desk.  Actually, his legs are so long it is as if he is unraveling himself from the desk and chair. That’s a long drink of water crosses my mind before I even have time to think. I feel a blush creep across my cheeks as I access his credentials, so to speak. He is young looking but possibly in his mid-30s. He is wearing some type of black top hat, dark shirt, and jeans. You have to wonder why he would want to cover those silky dark curls, which almost touch his shoulders. His eyes are a luscious black/brown too, with just enough spark when he smiles, which lets you know that he is fun and charming. Bet he smiles like that all the time, not just when he wants to take money from you for a card reading, but anytime. Anywhere. The dimples help with that assessment, too. The fortune teller is a gorgeous guy. How great is that? I feel excited about something for the first time in a long time. Surely THAT alone is an omen, but we shall see what we shall see. The spell is momentarily broken when he sits down on the desk in front of me, crosses his arms, and furrows his dark brows. Is something wrong? “An hour reading is 100 dollars. Half an hour only 50 dollars. What would you like today?” He looks at me and winks. Is he flirting with me? How unexpected. Why have I left the house with no make-up on? Looking him in the eyes makes me wonder…What would I like today?

Reflections of the Heart

Author: Tsungi Chiwara
Published: 17 June 2013
Genre: Christian Fiction
Pinky's Rating (out of 5): 4 dragonflies

Book Description

Each page of ‘Reflections of the heart, a story of hope’ will leave you wondering what will happen next. The opening scene is in a hospital setting and this immediately lets the reader know that something has happened. You are immediately hooked and must continue reading in order to discover what led to the state of affairs presented. This intense and gripping book centres on the somewhat cushioned life of an African girl, Kui, who grows up in pre and post-independent Zimbabwe. She was born in the early 70’s during the liberation struggle, although she was oblivious to that because she was young and her parents lived in the city. The exciting thing about the story is that the reader goes on a journey with Kui from the beginning.

The first few chapters are a detailed narrative, laying a foundation for the story by describing Kui’s background and upbringing. This entails giving an account of her years in primary school, her family life and her friendships. Of note is the particular focus on her high school years which are spent at a top notch boarding school. At some stage there is an introduction to Kui’s love life, which adds a romantic twist to the novel. This is all important in understanding who Kui is and setting the context of the novel.

The story evolves and becomes progressively conversational. It highlights Kui’s experiences as the years progress culminating to the events that led to her life reaching rock bottom. Somehow through it all God enters the picture, but will Kui take this life line? A significant portion of the book focuses on the soul-searching and turmoil within Kui’s heart, which she keeps to herself. However the reader is able to have insight of Kui’s mind and feelings through her thoughts and diary entries. As a result there is a glimpse into how the mind of a teenager works.

Several interesting and enjoyable characters are introduced as the story evolves and this enriches the story. One particular person that enters Kui’s life has a life-changing impact on her, though at first this seems unlikely. This person seems to be at peace with herself and this is what Kui longs for. Kui eventually discovers that this peace comes from a relationship with God. There is an aura about this key character that no doubt also fascinates those who read on and continue the journey with Kui.

The story and characters may be fictitious but the emotions and feelings of rejection, low self-esteem, little self-worth, depression, disappointment and pain are very real. Each reader will be able to identify with one or more of these, resulting in them relating to the story and being irreversibly touched and truly impacted. The story touches on a wide range of very relevant and timeless topics. These include social concerns such as the discrimination of people living with HIV and AIDS, the differing social classes and racism. Family dynamics have a strong theme in the story, including the impact of a father’s neglect on a growing girl. Issues of the heart are woven into the story in the form of teenage love and betrayal.

The book will also inevitably appeal to a wider audience such as those who like boarding school type novels, novels with a diary or memoir flair, romance and a bit of humour.

It is primarily for readers needing encouragement, motivation, inspiration, hope and searching for answers and a purpose in life.

This is a very rich and entertaining story about life, finding God and becoming at peace with oneself. It engages the reader who will inevitably find themselves reflecting on their own life. The novel is indeed a page turner!

My Thoughts

Reflections of the Heart conveys a very powerful message.

We are taken on a journey through the life of Kui a teenage girl from a middle class coloured family as she experiences life in Zimbabwe during the 1970's and 80's.

The story has been written almost as if we are reading Kui's most intimate stories and feelings as written in her diary as she tells of life at home, growing up with her twin brothers and then at boarding school as she comes to the realisation that her father has no time for girls.

We are given a glaringly honest insight into HIV and AIDS as well as the mental fragility of a teenager struggling to fit into a world that is ever changing around them. While the messages in this story stem from an earlier decade they are still as important to today's generation as they were back then.

This is a story of struggles for Kui, both cultural and spiritual as she learns who she is and what she is to become with the help of an understanding relative who teaches her how to love herself, so that others can love her.

While I enjoyed the story, towards the end I found myself skimming paragraphs instead of reading them fully. I felt it was a little too long and that the message once gotten across needed no further explanations.

Tied Up In Heartstrings

Tragedy ripped the security from her life. Left a single mother, Alexis's fear of loss insulates her from the rest of the world. Her best friends from college and close family are the only people she keeps close.

A man from her past has always been in love with Alexis. He’s never met anyone that measures up to her. Garrett is a musician, who never really imagined he’d have the fame and fortune that he's found. But, even with that, what he's always wanted is out of reach... or is it? When Garrett and Alexis meet up by chance a relationship begins. Neither expected what happens. She can’t be sure she’s ready for the complications a relationship brings. He will have to work overtime to win her heart without any assurances it will be successful. Alexis is learning about life without Jed, and is feeling more secure with parenting on her own. Garrett appreciates his fans and is enjoying his life on the road but misses having a private life. The lives they have built separately leave little room for a budding relationship, but their hearts won’t take that into consideration. Will the cards they’ve been dealt get in the way of a love that is meant to be? Is love enough to overcome loss and heartbreak? Can they accept all that the other is, without feeling like they are living in the shadow of their former lives?

Felicia Lynn is a transplanted Florida girl, born and raised, who lives just north of Atlanta, GA. She spends most of her days holed up in a cozy chair with a cup of tea and her laptop, writing about the characters that live in her head. When she’s not writing you’ll find her hanging out with her family and friends! She loves reading, taking long walks, chatting with her Facebook family, and listening to music, especially live music. A self-declared lover of all things baseball, she is obsessed with every aspect of the game!!!

Felicia writes contemporary romance, because love stories make people happy. Even in the midst of anguish and turmoil, true love can turn life around, and the process is beautiful. Most of Felicia's stories are based on real life experiences, which she embellishes to tell a story. She will soon be releasing her second novel, Mending Heartstrings and is currently working on her third novel, titled Love’s Learning Curve.

Just when life seems to be manageable, you’re thrown radically off course by “the one”. “The one” you weren’t expecting. “The one” who single handedly holds the key to the tattered and rusted lock to the walls surrounding your heart. Letting her into your protected sanctuary will only serve one purpose, intentional infliction of pain and heartache.

Jon is a man on a mission with only one agenda, to survive…to survive his past, and avoid letting his future be consumed by his history. It’s all really simple, until she walks into his world and turns it, on its axis. She makes him yearn for things he never wanted, or at least didn’t realize he ever would. Now his dreams and writings are consumed with the fantasy that this girl could change everything. But deep down he knows she deserves better. Better than him. Better than anyone he’s ever met.

He’s the lead guitarist for Garrett McKenna’s band. His life consists of touring, studio time, and writing music. That’s it. Staying healthy means keeping his routine, which has been easy enough until this little effervescent beauty rocks his world. Now he’s left questioning everything and doing some soul searching to decide if he’s equipped to give what he knows she needs and deserves.

Whitney avoids love at all costs. She’s not scared of it. She’s too strong to be that weak. She refuses to allow herself to lose her mind over another person, when there’s a high probability of getting her heart broken. She’s witnessed it more times than she can count, and she’s less than interested in taking the gamble.

Her strong will has served her well in life. Very few people know her secrets. She prefers to keep it that way. Her friends and family own her heart and deep devotion. She could easily do without the rest of the population but plays nice so she doesn’t appear to be the major bitch she knows she is on the inside.

Everything in her life makes sense. Her life is filled with more love and laughter than most will ever see, and it feels complete to her. She’s simply satisfied…until him.

He complicates things. His life isn’t something she understands or is willing to try to figure out. But she can’t keep her mind from wandering to the scruff faced, gorgeous guitarist, no matter how hard she tries.

He’s everything she’s never wanted, yet her heart is telling her differently. She fears she’s diving headfirst off the cliff of heartache. She’ll never recover from her brief no-strings weekend with this man. If she opens her heart it will be “the end”… no matter what. The question is what kind of ending will it be? Not all fairy tales have the happily ever after.
