Review - Creator of Shadows

Author: Miranda Stork
Published: 23 May 2014
Genre: Fantasy/Dystopian
Pinky's Rating (out of 5): 4.5 dragonflies

When Lorenna is kidnapped by Feoran, the head of the vampyric Clan, it’s a dent in the Resistance. While she was expecting his twisted advances to her, she didn’t expect to feel something for him in return.

But that’s the least of her problems.

The city is more in ruins than ever, the Cuans being cut off one by one to prevent the rebellious humans taking over any part of New London. And after the discovery made at the Factory, armies of clones now walk the streets, ready to kill and trained viciously by their vampire masters.

The rebels must band together in full force, both to rescue their beloved witch from Feoran’s clutches, and to give the final push against the Clan. But a traitor in the heart of their inner circle is plotting with a vampire who wants more than they have, threatening to bring everything they have worked for tumbling down around them.

Can Lorenna gain her freedom to help her friends, and can they finally cut the head off the serpent that is the Clan? Or will humanity forever remain in its iron grip?

Creator of Shadows is the third book in the Scarlet Rain Series.

I have not had the opportunity to read the first two books in the series, and while I did not feel this was too much of a disadvantage as this book seemed to work quite well as a stand alone, I think that readers would enjoy the book more if they have read them.

We follow the story of the Rebellion in their fight against the Clan, a group of rogue vampires who have taken over. There is plenty of action as well as a few lighter and more romantic episodes.

The combination of human, paranormal and mythical creatures spread through out this story is amazing. There is a mix of good versus evil and evil versus evil so will appeal to a wide audience.

I did have a little bit of trouble in the first half of the story and felt the story was a bit slow, however the pace picked up again towards the final quarter of the book and by then I couldn't put it down.

Review - Not Juliet: Addicted to Love Romance Collection

Author: Ella Medler
Published: 10 February 2014
Genre: Romance
Pinky's Rating (out of 5): 5 dragonflies

Riella Smith, an unconventional Romany Princess, travels to Tuscany on the trail of her father’s challenger, to delay him and prevent unnecessary bloodshed and humiliation. What she expects is trouble from a fearsome rival. But life is rarely that easy.

The trouble she finds is of a different kind. Soon, she faces the toughest decision of her life – again – though it should really be a no-brainer. All she has to do is choose between her people and a myth.

After all, there’s no such thing as love at first sight.

Can you fall in love with somebody from the very first instant you see them?

This is the question that plagues the mind of Riella Smith after she meets Luca, a tall dark stranger while in Tuscany on family business. But when she finds out who he really is will that ruin everything?

You will find yourself drawn into the story as the author weaves the story of intrigue and romance around the Romani culture.

I was captivated from the very first page, and as the story progressed there were twists and turns that I didn't see coming, and the ending, oh what a twist!

If you are looking for a novella (approx 180 pages) that has mystery, intrigue, humor, betrayal and redemption, then Not Juliet is the book for you.

Eve

The long flight home would have been a hell of a lot worse if it hadn't been for the woman sitting by my side. She'd initially taken one look at my tear stained face as I sat down beside her and left me alone. However, once we'd been in the air for a couple of hours, she decided I'd wallowed in my own misery long enough. "I don't want to interfere honey, but are you okay?" She has such a concerned look on her face that I can't be rude and not answer her. Besides, I feel like I do need to talk to someone. The silence of holding it all in is driving me crazy, and I know my mum won't want to hear about it when I get home. I don't even think she'll notice that I'm sad. "Not really, it's been a rough few weeks." She gives me a sad smile, and I laugh brokenly at the insanity of recent events. "I almost got killed, met the man of my dreams, and now I'm going home without him." Saying the words aloud releases a fresh bout of tears. I wipe at them and try to calm myself, but images of Gabe when I last saw him make me sad. One hand reaches over to pat my back gently, while the other offers me a tissue which I gladly accept. I'm feeling a tiny bit better already. "Well, we've a long flight ahead of us, why don't you tell me all about it? A problem shared is a problem halved." She smiles over at me. "My name's Elle, and I'm pleased to meet you." I turn to look at this kind stranger. She's beautiful, looks a little older than me with long blonde tresses falling past her shoulders. If it hadn't been for the ripped jeans and band t-shirt I'd have sworn she was a model. Hell maybe she is, she certainly looks the part. She also has one of those personalities that you seem to warm to, instantly. My gut tells me I can trust this woman, and this time I'm going to listen to it. She spends the next couple of hours listening to my story after I introduce myself. Her face goes through a whole host of emotions, laughter, sadness and downright shock to horror. I guess looking back, it's the kind of thing you see in the movies or read about in books. It just wasn't supposed to happen in real life, but it did. I'm glad she doesn't seem critical of the MC way of life either. I think I would have been if our roles were reversed. Instead, she just seems concerned for me. "Do you love Gabe?" She queries. I take a deep breath before answering her. "When I left I thought I did, but was scared that it was just lust for him. By the time I got to the airport I knew it was true, I do love him." I hunt through my bag for my phone, it's in flight mode so I flick through some of the pictures I took during my time in Australia. I want to remember my time there. I find a picture of me and Teresa with Pres and Gabe standing behind us and show Elle. Her eyes widen as she takes in the sexy men in the picture and I nod my head. I totally understand her reaction. All that hotness in tattoos and leather is eye wideningly orgasmic. I've just put my phone away when Elle takes my hand in hers, gently patting it. "It's not too late Eve. Go home, give your daughter the biggest and longest hug, then find a way to talk to your man and see if there's anything there on his side." She's right, I need to talk to Gabe to find out how he really feels. If this is all one sided then I need to buck up my ideas and stop pining, and if it isn't , I need to work out what to do about it. "Thanks Elle, I feel better for talking it through with you." Whilst I still haven't resolved my situation, at least now I have a better idea of what to do when I get home. I realize I've been monopolizing the conversation for the last few hours and feel slightly guilty. "Enough about my troubles, why don't you tell me all about you?" I'm not just being polite, I really do want to get to know Elle better. Elle shares that she's a freelance writer. Her current assignment is for an online travel magazine who are doing a feature on European holidays for singles. She's coming to the UK for a couple of weeks and staying in London, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh. "I don't believe it! I live in York. Can we meet up and I'll show you the sights." I beg. It would be great to show my new friend around, and selfishly I hope it will make my return a little less lonely. Whilst I'm happy to be seeing Elizabeth again, there's only so much two year old chatter you can stand before needing adult company. For some reason I felt an instant connection with Elle. "That would be great." Elle beams at me. Her beautiful smile lights up her whole face. "We'll sort the dates out before we land, but for now tell me more about this Ink character, he sounds yummy." I have to laugh at her choice of words, I'm not sure yummy is a word I'd use to describe Ink. It's the sort of word you use to talk about a fit mother in the nursery playground, not a hunk of tattooed hotness in an MC club. I tell her about his very short, dark hair, his muscled, tattooed arms, the hint of tattoos on his back and chest I'd caught glimpses of, but mostly about his character. Ink was my friend from the beginning, he was there for me when others turned their backs. Just thinking about Ink brings a smile to my face. Even though we went through an awkward stage when I found out his true feelings for me, I was glad we cleared it up before I left. "Holy hell," Elle swoons, "you've got to set me up with an introduction when I fly home." It will be good to have an opportunity to chat to Ink again, so I assure Elle I'll do my best for her. Besides, Elle's a freaking goddess, I'm sure Ink will be grateful for the introduction. The rest of the flight passes with mindless chatter. We find we have a lot of things in common, from favourite authors to music. By the end of the flight it feels like we've known each other forever. It's the kind of closeness I used to have with Teresa and I miss that in my life.

Review - Dance of Chaos

Author: Tabitha Ormiston-Smith
Published: 29 May 2014
Genre: Women's Fiction/Humor
Pinky's Rating (out of 5): 5 dragonflies

Lazy, frivolous, conceited and totally self centered, Fiona MacDougall is not an asset to the workforce. When she applies for a transfer to the Infotech department of her company, she does so only in order to get an afternoon off work.

Can she succeed in her challenging new job?

Can she save her little brother from the consequences of his evil deeds?

Will Moses do something embarrassing to the vicar’s leg again?

In this prequel to the acclaimed Gift of Continence, we see the hapless Fiona at work and in the bosom of her dysfunctional family.

OM Goddess!!

If you thought Gift of Continence was funny, you will love Dance of Chaos. How could one woman get herself into so many situations and make it out alive!

I honestly thought that life for Fiona MacDougall could not get any worse after reading Gift of Continence, but this little sneak peek into her life before marriage is even more hilarious.

While Fiona is trying to come to terms with a new job, and the horrid new boss to go along with it, she is forced to save her little brother from himself.

Let me just say, that writing a review about this book without giving away any spoilers is HARD !!

So to that end, let me just say that Tabitha Ormiston-Smith, has again written an amazing story that will have your sides splitting with laughter.

Warning - this story contains sexual references, profanity and Aussie tongue in cheek humor.

Review - Klipspringer Hill

Klipspringer Hill is an exciting tale about a small creature on an epic journey in search of a lost loved one. Their colourful worlds and unforgettable characters enthralled millions. Turn the pages of Klipspringer Hill and feel the sun's heat, hear the lion's roar, smell the smoke of burning African savannah. Aardvark, ostrich, blue-headed lizard, springhare, lynx, honey guide and vulture, are characters that will stay long in the memory.

What an amazing story !

Camac Johnson has taken the simple story of a child on a mission to find his father and woven it into an enchanting tale of adventure and survival.

Set in the Kalahari region of Southern Africa, we are introduced to a myriad of animals when Little Squirt, a juvenile egg-eater snake goes on an amazing adventure to find his father Bold Hunter who had set off on a journey to the Chicken Farm.

From the kind Aardvark and blue-headed lizard to the vulture, cobra and the dreaded head of the Chicken Farm, Rooster, Little Squirt fights the odds on his journey to at least find out what happened to his father.

Then just when you think the worst, there is a further twist in the tale.

This is an amazing and beautiful story that is written with such vivid imagery that you will find yourself drawn into the sights, sounds and smells along with Little Squirt as he faces danger at almost every turn.

I highly recommend this book and think that anybody who reads it will be drawn into it as much as I was.

Samantha burst out of The House of the Rising Sun, trying to catch up to me.

“Wait. Where are you going?”

I waved her off. “You’re on your own, kiddo.”

“Where are you going?”

“Wherever the day takes me. Disney World. The moon. I don’t know and I don’t care.” I lit a cigarette and took a drag. “I’m not messing with a female demon, or whatever it is,” I said, exhaling through my nose. “You think I’m bad? I at least have fun when I’m working. Those harpies just…they take things way too seriously.”

Female demons are the worst. So insecure. One look at another woman and next thing you know, the Titanic is sinking. Believe me, I know from experience.

“How can I stop one of them from getting the Shard?”

I stopped and turned around, moving within inches of her face. “They probably already have it. Why else would Pierce have attacked me? Why do you think we got jumped at the museum?”

Samantha shrugged. “I’m not sure.”

“Right,” I snapped. Lies. Or as angels call it, distortion of the truth. Anger boiled in my veins. I considered letting my horns out to play. It would be nothing to ram them through her chest, ruining her perfect C-cups. “So tell me, little miss angel face, why should I help you when you won’t tell me what you know?”

Samantha bit her lower lip, like she carefully considered what to say next. A wise move. I wanted to impale her like a matador.

“Well?” I pressed the button on my keyless entry to unlock my car. “I don’t have all day. I’d like to deflower a virgin or two before sundown.”

Her expression became stolid. “I can’t believe you’re scared,” she said derisively. “You. A demon. Afraid of a girl.”

She laughed and laid a hand on the roof of my Benz, adding to her offense.

I’d have removed her hand from her body, but she’d called out my demonhood, and addressing that took precedence. Nobody accused me of being afraid.

“Scared?” I spit out my cigarette. “I’m not scared. I’m just smart enough to know when to close up shop. You don’t have any idea what you’re talking about.”

“Maybe you’re right.” Samantha’s lips curled upward. “Maybe they did send me the wrong demon. Next time I’ll make sure they send me someone who knows how to finish the job.”

Oh, that burned. This girl was good. And I bought into it, because to be fair, why should I stand idly by and let somebody else succeed in my stead? I wanted to pat her on the back for such a fine manipulation, but thought better of it.

Growing up, Ryan Hill used to spend his time reading and writing instead of doing homework. This resulted in an obsession with becoming a writer, but also a gross incompetence in the fields of science and mathematics. A graduate of North Carolina State University, Ryan has been a film critic for over five years. He lives in Raleigh, NC, with his dog/shadow Maggie. Ryan also feels strange about referring to himself in the third person.
